What the Clippers are saying the day after Luka Doncic’s game-winner tied series, 2-2 Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error LOS ANGELES >> Coach Doc Rivers did not have a medical update on forward Danilo Gallinari, whose first season with the Clippers is looking more and more like a lost one. Gallinari sat out Sunday for the 12th game because of a non-displaced fracture of his right hand.Overall, Gallinari has played in only 19 games since the Clippers acquired him from the Denver Nuggets in a three-team trade last summer. He’s been sidelined by hand and gluteus maximus injuries totaling 50 games, and there’s no timetable for him to return to the active roster. When he has played, he has been effective for the Clippers. He averaged 15.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 32.2 minutes, or roughly what he’s averaged over his nine-season career in the NBA with the Clippers, Nuggets and New York Knicks.“Overall, of the guys we’ve missed (most), it’s ‘Gallo,’” Rivers said before the Clippers played host to the Portland Trail Blazers at Staples Center, another in a series of must-win games down the stretch for the playoff hopefuls. “It’s not even close.”Related Articles “We know who we have to be,” Doc Rivers said when asked about the Clippers’ ever-changing identity in 2017-18, when all their preseason plans had to be re-written on what seemed like a daily basis. “Due to the injuries, it changed (but) we know how we have to play.”Scoreboard watching?Doc Rivers doesn’t monitor the NBA standings. Or so he claimed. He did acknowledge that others let him know by how many games the ninth-place Clippers trailed in their fight to secure one of the top eight positions in the Western Conference standings by season’s end.“I really don’t look,” he said. “I have not looked at the standings in 10 years. It doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t matter. If you win the game, and keep winning the game, then things are going to work in your favor. … Just like in life, take care of yourself. Don’t ask anybody for any favors.” For Lakers’ LeBron James, Jacob Blake’s shooting is bigger issue than a big Game 4 victory Clippers hope they can play to their capabilities, quell Mavericks’ momentum Kristaps Porzingis ruled out as Clippers, Mavericks set for Game 5; Follow for game updates Gallinari presented opposing defenses with difficult choices. If they let him roam on the perimeter, he could hurt them with his 3-point shooting and playmaking. If they tightened up on him at the 3-point line, he could drive past for layups and dunks or draw fouls. For an all-too-brief period, Rivers had a deep and formidable rotation that could cause trouble for even the deepest and most formidable opponents. Gallinari and Tobias Harris manned the forward positions with DeAndre Jordan at center and Avery Bradley and Austin Rivers in the backcourt.Milos Teodosic and Lou Williams offered Doc Rivers depth at guard.Injuries to Gallinari and Bradley altered the Clippers’ plans, however. Gallinari hasn’t played since he was hurt in the Clippers’ loss Feb. 22 to the Golden State Warriors. Bradley underwent what is likely to be season-ending surgery to repair two lower abdominal injuries last Tuesday.Bradley, Harris and backup center Boban Marjanovic were acquired Jan. 29 in the blockbuster trade that sent Blake Griffin and two others to the Detroit Pistons. Bradley played only six games with the Clippers before he was sidelined by a sports hernia injury. The Clippers coveted Bradley as a hard-nosed, defensive-minded replacement for Patrick Beverley, who underwent season-ending knee surgery Nov. 22. Adjustments have been made on the fly this season for Doc Rivers and the Clippers in the wake of so many injuries. Clippers vs. Mavericks Game 5 playoff updates from NBA beat reporters
